Water appears to flow upwards due to the updraft at the hoover dam.

NEVADA, United States – Pour some water out of a water bottle and where does it go? To the floor, duh! From time to time at the hoover dam, though, things seem to flow upwards…

Hoover Dam water bottle experiment!

The structure of the dam creates an upward draft that makes water actually defy gravity – instead of traveling downwards, it is carried upwards by the wind. You have to see it to believe it! We didn’t know just how powerful it was until we experimented and poured water over the edge. A must do on your trip to the American Southwest!

This is pretty clearly due to the updraft created when it’s windy, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t still fascinating. If it’s powerful enough to direct the water upwards, I’d love to see what happens if I stick my face over it (obviously the danger of hanging over the hoover dam makes that impossible, but still.
