Alta Photographer Has Been Living The Dream Since The 1980s

“It is unbelievable freedom when you’re engulfed in powder, weightless—you are lost in the moment and found at the same time.”– Lee Cohen.

One of the best parts of Alta’s social media presence is its pictures from the ski area’s iconic powder days. The photography crew at Alta, which includes Lee Cohen, Rocko Menzyk, and Chloe Jiminez, captures skiers getting pitted.

Last week, Tom Attwater with Stio released a short video that details Lee Cohen’s legendary photography career. Back in 1981, Lee Cohen moved out to Utah. Lee spent his formative years in Long Island, New York, so this move to Utah must have been a culture shock, especially with the state’s archaic laws, and it being much less developed than it is today.

During the 1982-83 season, he began shooting his friend shredding at Alta. That winter was one of the deepest in Alta’s history, which kept him returning for more year after year. His work was encapsulated in the book Alta Magic, which features stories and legendary pictures of the Utah ski area.

The video below will get you fired up to shred some deep powder this season.
