It is my distinct pleasure to introduce you to the madness that is the mass start ski race at Der weisse Rausch…translation The White Rush. The annual race in St. Anton, Austria opens with 555 skiers and snowboarders lined up side by side before a starter pistol signals the beginning to a balls to the wall 1,346 meter vertical descent over a 9km course. Chaos.

TOP TO BOTTOM POV:

ABOUT The legendary ski race in St. Anton am Arlberg:

When the lifts close in the afternoon of April 22nd, things really get going in the ski resort of St. Anton am Arlberg. It’s the day of the “white thrill” – the cult ski race that pushes its participants to their sporting limits every year. Even during the day, there is a crackling atmosphere in the air: a noticeable number of skiers wear racing suits and mask their rising nervousness with jokes in the gondola or emphatically casual faces. At 5 p.m., things get serious: 555 skiers, snowboarders and telemarkers set off for the mass start at Vallugagrat.

If you’re interested in participating in the most excellent alpine tradition plan trip out to Austria next spring and budget an extra € 76 for entry fee (includes finishing present and pasta party) MORE INFO HERE
