Maine Skier Rescued From Extremely Rare East Coast Treewell

“His skis were caught by the tree, which really wasn’t that tall. It was just like a a 6-to-8-foot red spruce, and maybe only 18 inches or 2 feet of it was above the snow. So, the concern was the cavity created by the tree.” -Roddy Ehrlenbach, Sugarloaf Ski Patrol

A rare incidence of an East Coast treewell submersion is being reported out of Sugarloaf Ski Resort in Maine where a skier was trapped hanging upside down for 45 minutes over the weekend. New Center Maine reports the skier started his run on a double black diamond when he stopped, lost his balance, and fell head-first into the hole. Sugarloaf Ski Patrol responded to the scene and dug the man out who was thankfully uninjured.
