“On January 29, 2023, Kyle Smaine, beloved husband, son, brother, and friend, was unfortunately killed in an avalanche while on a ski trip in Japan. Kyle was a pro skier, talented cyclist, passionate adventurer, and an even more wonderful human. The many communities he touched have shown an outpouring of love and respectful words for Kyle, and we’re so grateful.

Amid the grief and despair, we all feel in Kyle’s absence, his family and friends are now enduring a painful reality and tedious process to arrange for his return home to South Lake Tahoe, California.

Death abroad is a complex situation, and the family is working closely with the Bureau of Consular Affairs and government officials from both the USA and Japan to ensure the end of life expectations are met and his body can return to US soil. Arrangements for his preservation and transport are subject to foreign law, permits, facilities, and customs requirements — creating unexpected and enormous costs.

With heavy hearts, we now ask for a different kind of support — to help with the logistics involved in returning Kyle home. If you have the ability to help financially, we are deeply appreciative of any contribution to help bring him home and organize a proper goodbye. ❤️”
