Cranmore Mountain Resort in North Conway, New Hampshire is going to have a unique base area setup for this winter. Over the summer, they demolished their base lodge to build the Fairbank Lodge, a multi-story building. While the first floor of the base lodge was expected to open this winter, a delay in electrical switch gear has delayed its opening. In response, the ski resort will be using temporary tents for this winter.

The Conway Daily Sun reports that the town Planning Board approved the use of temporary tent structures in place of a base lodge for this winter. According to Cranmore, a 3000-square-foot tent will host a cafeteria. Some of the food options will include house-smoked barbecue pork, brisket, chicken and sausage, along with Cranmore staples like mac and cheese and chili.” In terms of bathrooms, a heated portable toilet setup will be used, and another tent will feature seasonal lockers.

The famous Zip’s Pub, which is regarded as one of the best apres bars in the Northeast, will be reconfigured. The lower level will become a quick service area, while the upper section will still be a bar and restaurant. Additionally, Cranmore does have another base lodge, known as the Artists Falls Lodge. The lodge will have its Alpine Café and Bar open Friday thru Sunday, along during the Holiday periods. This is closer to their tubing park and mountain adventure park attractions though, so it’s not exactly easy for the average skier to reach.

Having a tent as a base lodge isn’t exactly the first time it’s been done in the New Hampshire ski industry. Loon Mountain’s South Peak base lodge, known as Pemigawasset Base Camp, is a permanent tent that was meant to be temporary. Its replacement with a permanent structure is planned as Loon Mountain’s 2030 master plan. While this isn’t an ideal setup, I think it will still be a comfortable guest experience.
