After a record amount of snowfall in December, the people of Lake Tahoe were hoping for a deep season. The deep snowfall basically stopped once 2022 started. Mountains like Palisades Tahoe are now trying to figure out how much longer they can go before shutting down for the season. In a recent blog post, they discussed their Spring operations plan. Weather dependent, they are hoping to make it to May 1st. Arguably their most popular lift, KT-22, is now officially shut down for the rest of the season. VP of Mountain Operations Michael Gross described their reasoning behind the decision: “It’s not the runs that are the problem, it is the ramps.” The flats melted quickly, making it challenging to keep the lift open for the last couple of weeks.  The only bright side of the situation is they can begin work on the various summer projects which will transform the mountain.

Red Dog to be Replaced: Red Dogs’ last day of operations will be on April 10th. After that, work will begin on dismantling the fixed-grip triple chairlift.  Its replacement will be a high-speed six-pack. The current lift reaches the top of Snow King and leads to intermediate and advanced terrain.  More details will be coming from the resort in the next few months. The newRed Dogs base terminal “will be moved east to a new location that gives skiers & riders direct access to the lift from the parking lot.” The new lift will go over the Far East Express, and end at the same location as its current iteration.

The Gondola: With an earlier closing date than usual, it means that construction will not face any delays for the Red Dog and the Gondola project. Aptly named the California Express, the gondola will take guests from Alpine Meadows to the base of KT-22/The Village at Palisades Tahoe in sixteen minutes. With the two ski resorts connected, the $65 million dollar project will make Palisades Tahoe the third largest ski resort in North America. The original intention was to get the gondola open for the 21-22 season, but wildfires and supply chain issues pushed it back to this upcoming ski season. Hopefully, these new lifts will bring a wave of snow with them for next season. Image Credits: Palisades Tahoe
