Black Mountain (NH) Threatens to Cancel Uphill Skinning Due to Trespassers

Black Mountain in Jackson, New Hampshire is one of the most popular skinning ski areas in the country. Andrew Drummonds founded the Friday Night Lights event, where tourers get to shred the mountain at night in a racing format. They even host a “Last Skier Standing” event, where tourers go all night to be the only remaining skinner left. But Black Mountain spoke out yesterday on individuals who are avoiding paying the $10 fee to skin up, among other violations. The mountain, which is located on private land, said skinners are parking at the inn, private roads, and houses, and in the auxiliary lots to avoid being noticed. If these trends continue, the mountain will ban uphill access altogether. I think this is a reasonable request, and locals need to understand the value of having an independent ski area gem in a region that is becoming more corporate by the year.
