Remotely triggered avalanche near Vail. Read this statement from The Colorado Avalanche Information Center and make smart decisions this week as more snow is on the way and avalanche conditions are forecasted to worsen:
“Yesterday, a group remotely triggered this avalanche in the Vail/Summit zone while traveling on a slope adjacent to where the avalanche ran. It illustrates that the snowpack needs more time adjusting to the new loads from the Christmas/New Year’s storms.
In the last two days, we have seen many slopes fail on weak layers near the ground, and many that haven’t could be very close to their tipping point. Even as the avalanche danger begins to decrease in some zones, remember the size of the avalanche you can trigger will not. Find out more about the avalanche danger and trend in your area by visiting colorado.gov/avalanche.
More snow and wind are forecast through the end of the week, focusing on the northern half of the state. Expect the avalanche danger to increase for areas favored for snowfall.”
