The Insane Story of How a Drug Plane Crash Led To Dozens of Yosemite Climbers Getting Rich

Never heard of this story before today, but damn is it a good one.

A Colombian plane crashed in frozen Lower Merced Pass Lake within Yosemite National Park back in 1977. Climbers began to investigate the crash after they spotted the nose of the plane sticking through the ice.

They ended up finding hundreds of pounds of Colombian weed, and it turned the area into a gold rush of sorts. The climbers packed out what they could and turned insane profits by selling the weed on the market. Insane.

Check out this quick video from Reel Rock about the real story. Something like this could never happen today with cellphones and what not, and that makes this story that much cooler.

Reel RockIn 1977, Yosemite climbers discovered a drug smuggling plane crashed in a frozen lake. Beneath the ice were hundreds of bales of Colombian weed! A gold rush ensued, the climbers got rich, and they made the iconic “I Got Mine” T-Shirt. Now we’re reviving this classic design in a limited-edition collab with our friends at Jungmaven.
