Bad news for anyone who was holding out hope for an early May reopening of their favorite Colorado ski resort, Gov. Polis just extended the ski area closures to at least May 23rd. This of course includes Wolf Creek Ski Area which had prepared itself to reopen this weekend.

The Aspen Times reports Gov. Jared Polis sent the executive order Thursday night. Its cites concerns about taxing health care services in mountain communities if the ban on spring skiing were lifted:

“Mountain communities, where many of Colorado’s premier ski areas are located, have been particularly hard-hit by the COVID-19 outbreak in the State. Medical centers in these areas have limited ability to meet the needs of individuals with COVID-19. Further strain on their resources creates a risk that medical personnel in the area will be unable to provide needed care to residents and visitors to our mountain communities.”

Fast forward to May 23rd. It will be the Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend. Last year because of heavy snow many resorts operated well past that date, so there might still a chance for spring resort skiing in Colorado but we will have to wait and see.
