NPS / Neal Herbert

The Colorado Sun is reporting that Backcountry.com, who filed for trademarks protecting the word “backcountry,” is suing a large number of small businesses who use the term “backcountry” to describe their products or services.

The e-retailer has even gone so far as to sue Constellation Outdoor Education over a women-focused avalanche education clinic called Backcountry Babes.

Backcountry.com was founded in 1996 by Utah ski bums but since 2015, the company has been under the ownership of private equity firm TSG Partners.

Backcountry.com, through a spokeswoman, declined to comment on the flurry of lawsuits.
