Tim Vandenack with the Standard-Examiner is reporting that Powder Mountain has applied for a conditional use permit with the Weber County Planning Division to construct a helipad. The helipad will be used to house one helicopter that will ferry skiers and mountain bikers to remote terrain.

Mountain Biking at Powder Mountain: Ski Utah

Powder will team up with Whisper Ridge, a heli-biking operation, to get the program running. The proposed dates of operation are December 1st-April 15th for winter, and June 1st-September 30th for summer. The helicopter will only operate three days a week and serve up to 24 customers per day.

Powder is already known for it’s vast terrain accessible by snowcat. Increasing their terrain by helicopter is well… SICK. I imagine that the prices won’t be as steep as your normal heli operation. Powder’s expansion could open the doors for avid skiers to experience heliskiing for the first time. It seems like Powder is taking massive steps to cement itself as a competitive destination to Utah’s other major resorts. I wonder how the locals feel about that…
