“Five hundred miles off the Chilean coast, there’s a small island surrounded by thriving seas and powerful surf. When Ramón Navarro, Léa Brassy and Kohl Christensen traveled there recently, they learned how the island’s residents are working to protect their wild waters and wild fisheries—and why, on the remote Isla Alejandro Selkirk, the word for outsiders is plásticos.”

If you have 13 minutes to spare I highly suggest you watch this little surf/travel/environmental documentary presented by the good folks over at Patagonia. Isla Alejandro Selkirk is remote, in fact it was previously known as Más Afuera (English translation Farther Out). It previously served as a penal settlement for criminals and political prisoners and is now home to 57 people per a 2012 census. Not you average surf trip. Dope.
