Alpine Media Technology is hoping to bump up the presence of their iPad-like displays on chairlifts and gondolas in a major way. Business Den reports the Centennial, Colorado startup has raised a whooping $1.6 million in the last 45 days. Bringing the company’s venture capital total to $3.2 million since 2017. The company plans to expand from 100 digital screens to 1,000 next year.

To date the digital displays have been installed at Winter Park, Steamboat, Shawnee Peak and Wachusett Mountain. The screens rotate between advertisements and mountain information like lift line wait times. Alpine Media Technology makes money selling 5% of the screen space to advertisers. The resorts to not pay Alpine Media Technology:

“The thing we’re most excited about is the guest communication. We are able to push messages like information about events, which lifts are closed and which runs are opening up. We appreciate that it’s a space people go to get away. At the same time, skiers bring their own devices, and they’re looking for the information we’re providing.” –Freddie Peyerl

One drawback to the screens installed last season is they have to be recharged every night but in the coming season they will be using a recharging process that provides a bit of juice everytime they cycle through the bullwheel at the bottom of the lift.

We’ve reported on this techonology since before it was even implemented and the majority of reponses has always been the same “Keep your screens off our chairlifts” but it seems despite of the apparent internet blowback the company is doing well enough to secure additional funding which in turn means you’ll be seeing more of these around ski resorts across the country.
