An 85 year old woman was walking with her dog within Craig, Colorado city limits around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday she came upon a mother mule deer and her two fawns. The mother deer turned on the elderly woman and attacked her leaving her with serious injuries. She was transported to Craig Hospital for treatment.

The Denver Channel spoke with CPW officers who said dow attacks are rare but dangerous when they happen. The dow was most like aggressive because she was caught be surprise and had her babies with her.

Later that night CPW staff located and captured the doe and her fawns. In accordance with agency policy and because of the animal’s aggressive behavior CPW  euthanized the doe and he fawns will be taken to a local rehabilitation facility. The doe’s body will be brought to CPW’s Wildlife Health Lab for a full necropsy.

CPW issued a warning reminding Craig residents s that there is a large mule deer population in the area and they should never approach wildlife, especially females with offspring. Be safe, be smart, keep a respectful distance.
