Late season snowfall in the Alps is allowing some ski hills to fire up their chairlifts and extend their ski seasons.

Last weekend saw over 4 feet of new snow at Hochkar Ski Center 90-miles from Vienna. The new snow allowed the resort to reopen for skiing and snowboarding which had been shut down since April 7th.

It’s the first time the ski area has opened in May.

“We were in the middle of preparations for the summer season, but the weather brought cold temperatures and heavy snowfall which led us to re-think opening the slopes,” said the director of the resort Rainer Rohregger.

Turracher Höhe also reopened for skiing and snowboarding thanks to the heavy snowfall. The ski area is offering free skiing from 8am to 1pm this weekend.
