Africa’s tallest mountain, Mount Kilimanjaro, could be getting a cable car in the near future. Tanzania is looking to boost tourist numbers and believes a cable car on the iconic mountain would draw tourists from all over the world.
Currently, over 50,000 tourists climb Kilimanjaro annually. It is projected that a cable car could increase annual tourist numbers by 50 percent.

However, many groups a who take climbers up the mountain oppose the project fearing the cable car would kill jobs. “One visitor from the U.S. can have a maximum of 15 people behind him, of which 13 are porters, a cook and a guide. All these jobs will be affected by a cable car,” Loishiye Mollel, head of Tanzania Porters’ Organization, told Reuters.
The length and location of the route is still being explored. There are various options under consideration depending on cost and engineering issues. An environmental impact assessment would also be carried out.
