To say the production of “Hannibal” at Sölden in Austria was over the top is an understatement. 7000 spectators turned out on the evening of April 12th to witness over 500 performers recreate 218 BC when Hannibal, accompanied by a colorful army of 60,000 Africans, Celts, Spaniards, thousands of horses and 37 elephants, crossed the main ridge of the Alps in just ten days and defeated Italy.

“The glacier spectacle HANNIBAL transports Carthage into the wildest mountains of Tyrol. A real-time Alpine crossing with the means of the present, a performance of over 500 participants at the Rettenbach glacier 3000 meters above sea level. Once silent, once thunderous , a precise choreography of dancers and avalanches, snow groomers, base jumpers, airplanes, helicopters and skidoos, paragliders and skiers spreads across the glacier. Recently, eight thousand spectators had gathered to follow the coup of the Carthaginian general live and with all senses. A show by the artist network Lawine Torrèn , which is comparable to nothing thatbiggest contemporary spectacle in the world.”

Architectural masterpiece of nature:

The horizon draws silhouettes of the 3,000 m high mountain peaks in the dusk. This is the picture frame for the largest nature formed show stage in the world. Played once in the immediate vicinity of the spectators, another time miles away. In the minds of the visitors large-format pictures are created, which went into the theater history. On the huge video wall in the middle of the stage, right next to the approximately ten-meter-high tiered pyramid, distant scenes are zoomed in on close-up shots. Together with Sölden and Red Bull, the artist network Lawine Torrèn stages Hannibal’s historic Alpine crossing with snow groomers, planes, dancers, helicopters and extreme athletes.
