Approximately 160 skiers and snowboarders were evacuated from the Lookout Double lift at Stowe on Sunday. The Boston Herald reports the lift stopped spinning around 10:30 a.m. Sunday due to an interruption in the electrical system. The auxiliary engine failed to kick in and ski patrol started evacuating the lift at 10:45 a.m. All guests were successfully repelled down by 1p.m. Two guests were treated for minor cold-related issues.
Keri Crafts of Burlington was on the lift with her two daughters for around 2.5 hours and witnessed people jumping from the lift:
“We got off and we were so frozen, it was probably 20 degrees, maybe. With the winds and snow, many people we talked to were like, we can’t even ski down.”
Stowe reports this is the first time in nearly a decade that it has had a lift evacuation. A state inspector visited Stowe on Monday to evaluate the lift which was built in 1979. Stowe plans to have the lift repaired and ready to operate this weekend.
