Dire news from Chamonix this morning as the Lognan Cable Car midstation at Les Grand Montets is engulfed by flames.
The iconic mid-station offers access to the summit of Grand Montets and the Argentiere Basin. According to 3 News Rhone Alps, helicopters are currently being employed to drop large buckets of water on the blaze. Officials with Compangnie du Mont Blanc expect the cables to fall and as such are prohibiting anyone from entering the area.

So far authorities suspect the fire may have started in the building’s attic, where sealing work was being done. The news comes at a horrible time for the Compagnie du Mont Blanc, which saw its famed Aiguille du Midi cable car shut down twice since spring due to ‘unforseen maintenance.’ With the Lognan cable car down as well, two of the valley’s major attractions remain in limbo for the upcoming ski season.
