Dr. Jonathan Torgerson, 62, was a beloved local doctor in Whitefish, MT. He went missing back in February after venturing into the backcountry alone near Whitefish Mountain Resort.

A large winter storm rolled into the area soon after the doctor went missing, stifling search and rescue operations.

Jonathan Torgerson’s body was finally recovered at around 11 a.m. Saturday morning on May 12, nearly three months since his disappearance. Torgerson’s remains were found “on the north side of the mountain.”

In a press release Flathead County Sheriff Chuck Curry wrote, “it appears he was caught in a small avalanche on February 17. The warming temperatures and snow conditions contributed to the successful recovery.” He added that a K-9 team “was instrumental in today’s mission.”

“The Sheriff’s Office wishes to thank all of the volunteers who have contributed countless hours in this ongoing search to bring Dr. Torgerson home to his family.”
