The gargantuan plow job required to clear Glacier National Park’s iconic Going To The Sun Road is taking longer than usual. Avalanche danger, deep wind drifts, and a historically deep snowpack are combining to make the job harder than usual and it “could be months” before the road over Logan Pass opens to the public says KPAX.com.

How historic of a winter was it northern Montana? Glacier National Park officials recently cited an annual snow survey near Logan Creek which indicated that may be the deepest winter in the park in at least 30 years.  Normally the Going To The Sun Road opens in late June/early July but this year could see a later than normal opening.
