It is being reported that 6 US soldiers were injured today in an avalanche near Stowe ski resort in Smugglers’ Notch. The backcountry slide occurred in Easy Gully on the north side of Mt. Mansfield.

“National Guard officials say the soldiers were swept up in the avalanche at about 1 p.m. The soldiers were not buried by the avalanche but they slid nearly a quarter of a mile down the mountain. It took 10 minutes to find them.” – wcax.com

5 of the 6 soldiers who were caught in the avalanche were taken to the hospital.

The Vermont Department of Public Safety said the recent storms have created ‘‘extremely unstable conditions in steep terrain.’’

It’s unclear what the soldiers were doing when the avalanche hit.
