A backcountry skier, who was skiing with a friend east of Vail ski area, was rescued on Monday night after placing a 911 call.

It is being reported by Denver Post that the man who was rescued did not tell rescuers that he had been skiing with a friend until the following morning. When rescuers returned to the area on Tuesday they found the body of 24-year-old Samuel Failla of New Jersey.

Authorities said he later told them that he assumed his friend had gotten out of the woods on his own.

The Eagle County coroners’ office is working to determine the cause of death. Officials are asking that anyone with information about this incident to call the Eagle County Sheriff’s Office at 970-328-8500 or Eagle County Crime Stoppers at 970-328-7007.
