In 2006, with the financial crisis bearing down on the tourism industry of Japan, Arai Mountain Resort was forced to shut down with a 20 foot base. Times were dire and the world-class Japanese ski area was forced to shut down. Thankfully, that dire narrative is shifting along with ownership of the mountain resort.

The Korean Lotte Group, whose holdings include everything from confectionary goods to hotels, will reopen the ski area starting this December, 2017. In addition to new ownership, the ski area will also be given a new name– the Lotte Arai Resort.
“Lotte Alai Resort is located in the central part of Honshu, and the area is located in the vicinity of the Tokyo Metropolitan area and the major airports. In addition, there are 2 AIRPORTS IN AN INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT WITHIN 2 hours, so you will be able to feel free from overseas customers. It’s finally open on December 16″
Located just north of Nagano in the Myoko mountain region, the new ski area will feature some stunning bowl skiing that is atypical for most Japanese resorts. And while it’s small (*388 acres), the backcountry potential is large to say the least. The ski area will also include 10 areas that will be left ungroomed for those looking to get lost in #japow.
