A 19-year-old staffer at Glacier View Ranch, a Christian retreat and conference center, survived a bear attack early Sunday morning. The staffer who goes by Dylan was sleeping outside when he awoke at 4 a.m. to a crunching sound according to The Denver Post.

He quickly realized it was a bear biting his head in an attempt to drag him away. He reached up and started hitting the bear and along with other staff members managed to scare it away. He was treated for his injuries at a local hospital receiving 9 staples and was released.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife used hounds to track the bear Sunday morning. They let the dogs smell the sleeping bag Dylan was using to get the bear’s scent.  The hounds were called off after the temperature became too hot and were brought back into the search when it cooled Sunday afternoon. Bear traps have been set. The bear will be euthanized if it is caught.
