“After 45 years of experience, now we’re making down sleeping bags.”

After 45 years of making some of the best outerwear in the outdoor industry, Patagonia has thrown its hat into the sleeping bag arena.  Its a pretty big deal for the company and they have a heavy duty press release to accompany it:

“VENTURA, California – Patagonia’s new 850 Down Sleeping Bag is inspired by the bag Patagonia founder Yvon Chouinard built for himself 45 years ago—a simple mummy-style bag with overstuffed channels and a center-front zipper that let him tie in at belays, cook at bivies, move around without the bag twisting and have consistent loft, trip after trip. Inspired, Patagonia set out to create its first sleeping bag, an updated version of Yvon’s innovative bag. The new 850 Down Sleeping Bag is an elegant, real-world bag built with the best available materials and 45 years of down-construction expertise.

“After years and years of making one-off sleeping bags for ourselves and people heading out on select trips, we wanted to share what we’ve learned with the greater outdoor community,” said Jenna Johnson, Patagonia’s sr. director, technical outdoor. “Our team built on a deep knowledge of insulation design and thought through every aspect of these sleeping bags, offering our customers a highly crafted, super functional bag option. Sleeping bags are such a crux part of our kit, and they become like a partner as we go out to explore and see new places. I’m very proud of our work and excited to offer these products to our customers.”

For more than four decades, Patagonia has been dedicated to perfecting the art of working with down insulation. Materials, design, construction, field-testing—these state-of-the-art practices developed over the life of the company have come together to make Patagonia’s down products the most trusted anywhere.

Available in 19°F / -7°C and 30°F / -1°C models, both of which are EN tested and rated, the Down Sleeping Bag is built for three-season efficiency and comfort for technical outings ranging from casual to progressive. Both bags feature a custom, differentially cut foot-box pattern that eliminates dead space and bulk, maximizes warmth and affords ample room for movement. Each sleeping bag contains only 850-fill-power Traceable Down, traced from farm to factory to help ensure the birds are not force-fed or live-plucked. Ultracompressible 850-fill-power down provides exceptional heat-trapping warmth, maximum loft and light weight.

The shell fabric is an ultralight 100% nylon ripstop Pertex Quantum® fabric, which features 15-denier Y-shaped filament technology that allows maximum down loft, provides superior durability, and enhances the performance of the DWR (durable water repellent) finish. The liner is made from the same fabric as Patagonia’s beloved Houdini styles: a durable, but featherweight 15-denier 100% nylon ripstop that dries quickly and offers superior next-to-skin comfort.

Unique to the 19° bag is the comprehensive differential baffle construction, which is an innovative method of designing a sleeping bag with no sewn-through areas and a smaller liner circumference to the larger shell, to help ensure the down stays lofted, and cold spots are eliminated. The 30° bag features stitch-through construction—a simple and lightweight solution that is perfect for warmer weather or light-and-fast, minimalist needs.

The Down Sleeping Bag is available globally on March 2, 2017, and comes in short, regular and long sizes. The Down Sleeping Bag is available for purchase at Patagonia retail stores and at Patagonia.com.”
