WATCH: Interview with Colorado Woman Stranded 52 Hours In Backcountry After Accidentally Skiing Out Of Bounds

A woman and her friend survived 52 hours in the Colorado backcountry without survival gear, food, or water after accidentally skiing out of bounds while at Monarch Mountain. 

Kelsey Malin sat down with Denver 7 to talk about her harrowing ordeal that all started in search of freshies. Kelsey and her friend had just gotten of the Panorama Lift and went straight for some fresh snow not realizing they were skiing out of bounds:

“There were no ropes, no signs or anything – just this awesome stash of powder and trees.”

Once they realized they were off course they tried to hike back up to the run but couldn’t do it.  They had no provisions for an overnight stay but managed to dig a snow cave to stay warm. They tried again the next day to hike out but once again couldn’t make it and spent another night in a snow cave.

“There were definitely some points where I thought I was going to die. There were definitely points where I wanted to give up.”

Eventually help arrived and the pair were taken to an area hospital where they received treatment for frostbite. Kelsey Malin hopes to keep many of her toes and can only think about the next time she can go skiing.
