Earthquake Triggers Avalanche In Nepal, Killing Sherpa And Injuring British Climber

Early this morning, A 5.4 magnitude earthquake shook the mountains surrounding Ama Dablam, killing one sherpa and injuring a British mountaineer reports The Seattle Times.

The avalanche occurred at an elevation of approximately 19,680′ and included large chunks of ice and snow falling from the mountains’ peak. Search and rescue personnel employed the use of a rescue helicopter to pull the two off the mountain. Tragically, the Sherpa died while in transit to base camp. The climber is currently receiving medical treatment in Kathmandu.

According to Nepal’s National Seismology Center, the earthquake struck just 75 miles east of the capital. So far, no other fatalities have been linked to this most recent quake.
