A lightning strike in Norway has killed more than 300 reindeer.

In what wildlife officials are describing as an unusually large natural disaster, aerial footage showed the animals bodies scattered across a mountain plateau in the centre of the country. In photos released by the agency, the animals are visible in piles up to 100 yards apart.

The incident is said to have happened during a violent storm.

But how could so many reindeer die from a single lightning strike? Norway’s Environment Agency says reindeer usually huddle together during bad weather, which could explain why so many were killed.

In this image made available by the Norwegian Environment Agency on Monday Aug. 29 2016, shows some of the more than 300 wild reindeer that were killed by lighting in Hardangervidda, central Norway on Friday Aug. 26, 2016 in what wildlife officials say was a highly unusual massacre by nature.
