traphuck-1-500x374“Someone has already decided to drive their car up there, so why not fill it up on the way up?” -Councilmen Max Burdick

It’s a tale as old as time, smooth sailing all the way up the highway but as you hit the two lane access road up to the hill its like your back in the city. Traffic congestion leading up to ski resorts is nothing new but Salt Lake County leaders possible solution to it is.

Councilmen Max Burdick, Richard Snelgrove and Sam Granato are pushing  a proposal for a Little Cottonwood Canyon rideshare program according to the deseretnews.com.

Similar programs have been highly successful in Washington, D.C. and San Francisco where it is referred to as “Slugging.” Slugging is described as solo commuting drivers taking advantage of California’s speedy carpool lane system by picking up passengers, often strangers, from designated areas and giving them free rides.   The practice has been going on for decades in SF and the city has even installed signs near popular pickup places in support.

The canyon does not have carpool lanes so drivers will need a different incentive to pickup additional passengers. The council has been in touch with ski resort officials who have expressed interest in possibly providing vip parking options to carpoolers. Pretty cool eh?

Very interesting solution to a problem plaguing us diehards skiers forever. Lets hope this catches on and we can see more sharing up in the mountains and less traffic. Would you pickup a couple extra people before you hit an access road so you could get some primo parking?
