A New Zealand born mountaineer died at 11:30AM local time this morning in a 600 meter avalanche on Mont Blanc du Tacul in the same area as the tragic July 2012 avalanche that claimed 9 lives.
A mountain rescue team found his body but he was pronounced dead on scene. The other two climber involved in the slide were from the PGHM in Chamonix, a mountain rescue team based in the area, according to chamonet.com. They were taken to the hospital for apparent shock.
An investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the avalanche. We will update as the news comes in. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of the fallen climber.
