According to the Park Record, Park City’s premier cat and heli-ski operation formally filed a opposition to Vail Resort’s request to trademark the name “Park City.” The formal motion was filed via The United States Patent and Trademark Office. In their filing, the privately owned cat-ski operation cited the fact that future lawsuits could prevent them from using a brand that took over 19 years to build.
The filing went on to state that Vail Resorts has no real entitlements in their quest to trademark the name because the name in question belongs to a municipality.
“It is inappropriate for (Vail Resorts) to attempt to claim ownership of the name of a municipality which should be the sole entity to determine the use thereof.” – Park City Powdercats & Heli Ski
However, since filing the opposition, the two parties have been in contact and Vail Resorts‘ vice president of mountain community affairs, Kristin Kenney Williams says they are optimistic as to process’ future.
