Even after an especially bleak season on the east coast, skier numbers continue to rise in the United States.

According to the Aspen Times, an estimated 53.9 million skiers hit the slopes this year, many of whom went west for deep snow and cold temperatures not readily available in New England. That number is up 300,000 from the previous season.

The current record is 60.5 million, which was set during the La Nina winter of 2010/2011!

After their own dismal 2014/2015 season, the Pacific Northwest contributed to the increase after resort officials recorded a 142% surge in skier visits over the course of the season. The southwest also saw a noticeable improvement with a 53% jump. The Rocky Mountain Region stayed close to normal with a small but significant 8% increase.

However, the midwest, northeast, and southeast’s below average numbers had a negative effect on the overall total, which fell short of the 10-year average of 56.5 million skiers per year.
