It was a fortunate discovery for the mountain guides, as the dismal conditions in Switzerland this season left many of them out of work. Visitors may not be able to explore the slopes but they can explore the other worldly terrain of ice caves.

The system of ice caves was found below the Morteratsch Glacier in canton Graubünden.  To explore it they had to descend 180 metres through steep walls of ice.
