In the midst of the Worst Drought in California History, Lake Tahoe’s Hard Rock Hotel and Casino has a pool leak for the record books. Approximately 20,000 gallons of pool water is disappearing daily and has been for almost a month reports the Lake Tahoe News. Not only that but it wasn’t until this past Thursday that hotel management notified officials about the lost water.

As of Friday, the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection began their investigation as to how the pool water is disappearing and what the environmental repercussions might be. The pool is now closed indefinitely. However, the pool remains filled to the brim and so is the hot tub.

In an interview with the Lake Tahoe News, JoAnn Kittrell of the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection had these comments.

  • “They noticed an increase use in water in the pool in the last 30 days. They concluded it must be a leak,”
  • “They are going to dechlorinate and remove the water safely and legally,”
  • “They have sonar as a way to figure out where the leak is. They hope to do a minimal amount of excavation to reach it. The important thing is to stop any continued leaking into the soil there.”

As of now the pool holds upwards of 200,000 gallons of water and exactly how much and where the leaked water has gone is yet to be determined.
