A large avalanche Sunday morning caught 35 skiers in the French Alps. The 800 meter long wet-slide avalanche was triggered shortly after 11 o’clock in the morning in a very popular off-piste ski descent.
Miraculously there were only two serious injuries in the slide. A policeman at the scene said, “you can light a candle to a saint, because they are a living miracle.”
Several skiers managed to dig themselves out before rescuers arrived at the scene. A number of other skiers were equipped with avalanche airbags and were able to avoid being buried. In total, 35 skiers were swept up by the avalanche.
Official said that all 35 skiers in the couloir at the time of the avalanche were “experienced skiers” and that no one was singly responsible for the slide.
The off-piste route the skiers were descending “Combe Marion” is a relatively easy route but is known for it’s high risk of avalanches.
