weathertoski.co.uk brings us this report on record-breaking snowfall for parts of the southern Alps.
“The most extreme snowfalls seem to have been in the upper Lombardy area close to the Swiss border. Here a local meteorological professional told me that between Tuesday and Thursday around 230cm of fresh snow fell at altitude above the resort of Madesimo and 150cm in the village, where they suffered a total power blackout. Over the border, the Swiss Tessin region also got hammered with 120cm of snow in just 24 hours at the weather station of St Bernadio (source SLF – the Swiss Institute for snow and avalanche research).
Most other Alpine areas have also seen significant snowfall in the last couple of days, with the exception of Austria – where away from the far south (and to a lesser extent the far west) little if any new snow has fallen.” – weathertoski.co.uk
