Warm Weather Across The Alps Has Led to Hundreds of Avalanches

Warm weather across the Alps this week has led to hundreds of avalanches. Warm weather and late season, high angle sun is heating up the snowpack and causing  wet slides on South facing aspects. 

Over the past week 3 people have died in separate avalanches in Switzerland.

  • April 12th: A 47-year old Swiss man died as he was buried under 1.2m of heavy snow.
  • April 13th: A climber died while setting out climb the Matterhorn when a slab avalanche hit him.
  • April 14th: A 41-year old Austrian man died in Fieschertal in a wet slide.

Total number of avalanche deaths this season

  • Switzerland: 21
  • France: 30
