Two avalanches struck separate groups in the Cascade mountains east of Seattle this weekend resulting in the death of a woman snowshoer. Another snowshoer is still missing as rescue crews continue to search.
Avalanche #1:
- Location: Granite Mountain (Snoqualmie Pass)
- Avalanche: 30 feet wide, eight feet deep and about a quarter-mile long
- The Avalanche carried three snowshoers more than 1,200 feet
- Two men survived , but their friend, described as a 60-year-old man, was still missing Saturday evening.
Avalanche #2
- Location: Red Mountain near the Alpental Ski Area off I-90.
- A woman was hiking with her dog near a group of a dozen other people when the avalanche hit.
- The woman was dug out from under 6′ of snow but later passed away.
