The Wall Street Journal published an article today highlighting the rebirth of skiing in Pakistan’s Swat Valley.

Skiing in Pakistan’s Swat Valley

In an effort to recreate the resort they once had, last year locals built their own improvised chairlift.

Powered by a 2000cc Diesel engine from a Toyota Corolla, the chairlift can take six people up the slope at a time. The seats are from a Toyota HiAce wagon, which is more commonly seen plying the streets picking up passengers in cities across Pakistan.

The chairlift serves a single steep slope. Locals boast about the perfect powder snow conditions, but the slope is unpolished and makes for a challenging descent.
