Cold and Snow This Week For Tahoe

A transition to colder and more active weather is expected this week as low pressure moves into the west. This is depicted in the image above showing the model forecast of the upper level low in the green lines and the precipitation in the shaded areas, valid Tuesday evening. Winds will increase Monday afternoon into Tuesday ahead of and along a strong cold front with gusts of 35 to 45 mph in valleys and up to 100 mph along Sierra ridges. This cold front will usher in a significantly colder air mass with temperatures dropping 10 to 15 degrees below normal, or 20 to 25 degrees cooler than this past weekend. Snow is expected late Monday night into Tuesday in the Sierra with 4 to 8 inches possible below 7000 feet and up to 14 inches along the Sierra crest. Snow showers are probable in western Nevada along the cold front Tuesday with light accumulations up to 2 inches possible. This will likely impact travel with delays and chain controls possible across Sierra passes. The cold and unsettled conditions will continue through the week into next weekend with several weak low pressure systems quickly moving through the region. – US National Weather Service Reno Nevada
