In Canada’s Squamish-Lillooet Regional District, home to Whistler, the average person will spend $967 per year on alcohol. That is nearly three times the amount spent by your average hockey loving Canadian. However, according to the new survey released by the B.C. Liquor Distribution Branch the numbers might not tell the whole story.
“The figures don’t take into account the number of tourists who visit the resort each year,” acknowledged Vince Cournoyer Manager of Communications for the B.C. Liquor Distribution Branch. “As a result, the per capita beverage alcohol sales figures appear to be higher as they do not take temporary population figures into account.”
Whistler Coun. John Grills agrees the results do not accurately represent the region, pointing out that the average daily population in Whistler is just over 20,000 people. During busy weekends Coun. Grills said Whistler’s population can rise to over 40,000 people, skewing the per-capita average. – whistlerquestion.com
The survey also reveled that beer is the most popular drink followed by wine then hard liquor.
