Accident Summary

Colorado’s second avalanche fatality of the season occurred on Sunday in an area south of the town of Marble. The avalanche happened in the Raspberry Creek drainage which is part of the Raggeds Wilderness area. CAIC forecasters will visit the area on Monday, January 14th, and we will post more information when it is available. Our thoughts go out to friends and family of the victim. – Colorado Avalanche Information Center

On Sunday, the avalanche danger for the Gunnison zone was moderate. Forecasters said deeply-buried weak layers were a concern on Sunday, and human-triggered avalanches were possible on slopes of 35 degrees and steeper.

This was the first avalanche fatality of 2013 in the United Sates.
