On Saturday, North Shore Rescue and Cypress Mountain personnel were called to the scene of a 26-year-old backcountry skier who had fallen into a muddy creek embankment near Hollyburn Ridge and the Baden Powell Trail outside Cypress Mountain ski area.

West Vancouver police spokesman Sgt. Paul Skelton said Saturday the man was skiing with a friend near Hollyburn Ridge around noon when he went over a three-metre embankment and landed in a creek.

“He was found in distress buried in that muddy creek, and he passed away from his injuries after his fall,” Vancouver police spokesman Cpl. Fred Harding said Sunday evening.

The victim, who’s identity has not been released, was extricated from the scene by helicopter on a long line and then transferred to a waiting ambulance by the Cleveland Dam. The exact cause of death is still unknown at this time.
