Afghan Village "Completely Swept Away" by Avalanche | 42 Confirmed Dead

At least 42 people have been killed and many more are missing in an avalanche in Afghanistan. The avalanche obliterated a village of around 200 people near the northern border with Tajikistan. The deputy governor of Badakhshan province initial reports state that only three women and one child have survived the avalanche. This has been a harsh winter for Badakhshan province where freezing temperatures and avalanches have already claimed the lives of more than 100 people.

Sadly, Afghanistan is all too familiar with the tragedy of avalanche activity. In February 2010, around 170 people were killed in an avalanche near the Salang Tunnel that connects northern Afghanistan with the central parts of the country.
