Wanna ski/ride in the summertime? Of course you do. Wanna hang in the land of `Lord of the Rings.` Yeah, you saw the movies, you know how sick it is in New Zealand.
Summer is hot and you`d rather be shredding pow, hitting the best park in the Southern Hemi, and logging some heli time. Some summer camps offer summer skiing on salted glaciers…Inspire Snow Sessions offers summer skiing in the Southern Hemisphere with Frodo on winter snow.
Now, you want details. Unofficial`s got blunt questions, Inspire`s got answers.
Here`s the questions:
Here`s the answers:
Unofficial: What makes the location of your camp special?
Inspire: We have a truly unique location amongst summer camps, located in New Zealand we get fresh snow throughout July/August so think pow days and plenty of snow for the park shapers. Wanaka is one of the most beautiful places in the world, it’s an all year round resort town perched on the edge of the spectacular Lake Wanaka, surrounded with the jagged Southern Alps. We live below the snow line so we still can engage in outdoor activities when off snow, by the end of the season it’s usually warm enough to have a
BBQ down by the edge of the lake!
On top of that Wanaka is super easy to get to, direct flights run overnight from LA down to Auckland daily and it’s a short hour hop down to Queenstown, where we pick you up to drive up to Wanaka.
Really you couldn’t ask for a better balanced location to have a summer snow camp.
Unofficial: What can campers expect of your on-hill facilities?
Inspire: Well with it being the middle of winter we get fresh pow days up at Treble Cone. Treble Cone has some amazing terrain, with natural half pipes all over the place, a high speed lift for quick laps. Plus some awesome side-country in the Motatapu basin. We run avalanche safety introduction courses, familiarising you guys with beacons, shovels and probes before we explore over there though.
Our other on snow base is Snow Park NZ, for those that don’t know the resort it’s just one big park with a four man chair running up the middle for quick laps. With the resort being purely focused on it’s park it means that they have an awesome group of people there, constantly evolving the park and features to make it truly world class. They have a perfect spread of features form beginner boxes and jumps through to a huge jump line and 22ft superpipe.
Snow Park also offers bi-weekly night sessions, meaning we are the only camp in the world to include night sessions in our package. So forget the icy mornings and slushy afternoons of glacier camps, we offer winter skiing/riding all day and some evenings meaning that we have more coached on snow time than any snow camp in the world!
Oh also we offer heli-skiing days as an extra to make the most of your summer (Heli-ski days added extra, see website for more info). We’ve teamed up with Harris-Mountain Heli-Ski, the largest help-skiing operator in New Zealand, they are offering us there classic 4 run day for an exclusive price. Check out the website for more info.
Unofficial: What is the direction of the coaching during a session?
Inspire: The coaches are the most important aspect of our camp, there’s no point having these awesome facilities at our disposal if you don’t have the coaches to get the best out of them. Our coaches are super motivated individuals, there purely to provide a fun environment for you progress your individual skiing and snowboarding. We have small group sizes – absolute max of 6 per coach – which means we can provide a tailor made programme to your needs.
Overall our focus is to produce rounded skiers and snowboarders, by offering training on and off-piste as well as in the park. This way when you return home you have the full skill set to continue improving your skiing and snowboarding into the future.
Unofficial: What`s the deal for meals during camp?
Inspire: We have our own personal chef cooking 2 or 3 course meals for dinner each night, sothe food is fantastic. Varied healthy meals, meaning fuelling you to get the most out ofyour time with us. Importantly our coaches sit down with you at dinner, creating a real communal feel, where you can chat about the awesome day you had on-snow!
Breakfast is also laid out each morning, for clients to help themselves to.
Lunch isn’t included, but there are some great places to eat on the mountain and a
supermarket in town to get stuff for sandwiches.
Unofficial: What types of off-hill activities add to the camp experience?
Inspire: Loads! Again, we are below the snow line so we can offer a full list of outdoor activities.
At our accommodation we have a big hot-tub to rest those legs, a tennis court, a large outside grassy area and also full entertainment system inside with TV, DVDs, Game Consoles and Wi-Fi! Every evening we squeeze in some activities and also have a full day off-snow each we to do some full day activities. The activities include, rock climbing, trampolining, soccer, tag rugby, baseball, video games, tuning workshops, cinema visits, trips to Queenstown, crafts, loads of stuff.
Unofficial: When it’s time to head home, what can a camper expect to leave your camp with?
Inspire: Well hopefully they have had an awesome time! After that hopefully a bit of lifeexperience from travelling to a new country. Become a better skier, one that is more rounded and can go back home and keep improving at the rate they want to. Overall, we are just trying to create a really good all round experience that will stick with them forever.
Inspire: We advise clients to come down for 2 weeks that way they can get the most out of their time with us instead of suffering from jet-lag!
