While backcountry snowboarding in Japan, pro journalist Seth Lightcap made a simple mistake that nearly cost him his life. He was rushing to escape a bitter cold wind and decided to wait for his friends in a protected gully. When his friends rode up, the gully avalanched trapping Seth in the center of the slide. The violent ride beat Seth within an inch of his life and left him with a broken pelvis, a dislocated shoulder and torn ligaments in his knee. After three surgeries and eight months of rehab Seth is back charging in the mountains again but he’ll never forget the mistake he made that day in Japan. Watch the video to hear more about how the “Human Factor” affected Seth’s poor decision making in the backcountry.
