Out of Bounds: Tales from the Backcountry is a photo expedition and competition for professional and emerging backcountry photographers. Whistler is full of photographers but there is only so many that shoot outside of the Whistler Blackcomb resort. The parameters of this contest is that you can’t use a lift to get there, so Fissile and Flute are out of the question. The photos have to be somewhere outside of the resort completely, so there are no chairlifts allowed. Only Heliskiing, cat trips, skinning or sledding.

This is not a spin-off  of Whistler Blackcomb’s Deep Winter Photo Challenge. Deep Winter is a different event with only three days to shoot. This exhibition features photographers and different images from around B.C.  This year the competition opened for all photographers around B.C., and they have had an increase in the number of high-caliber applicants ranging from award-winning professionals to first time entrants.

According to Doti Niedermayer, Director of Whistler Arts Council: “Out of Bounds is a great opportunity to see a significant number of the best photography we have from from the region, showcasing our coastal mountains and the amazing talent of the skiers and boarder who make Whistler and BC their home. Whether you are a local or a visitor, this exhibition is a great showcase o why people come to Whistler”.

This years roster includes: Brian Hockenstine, Cam Unger, Dagan Beach, David Henkel, Derek Vanderkooy, Eric Berger, Finn Saarineen, Hans Gulsvik, Jeff Boyce, Jo Winter, Kip Wiley, Lorne Graham, Nic Teichrob, Pat Mulrooney, Phil Tifo, Sam McRae, Trevor Langdon and Vince Shuley.
